LU CONCRETE CANOE TEAM HEADED TO AUSTIN
4/6/00
After several weeks preparation, 17 Lamar University civil engineering students are headed to Austin today (April 6) for a test of their ability to create, demonstrate and navigate a canoe of concrete. The students, members of the Lamar chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will compete against members from universities across the state and Mexico in the annual Concrete Canoe Competition, an event sponsored by ASCE and Master Builders, Inc. The event, April 7-8, is hosted by the University of Texas at Austin and the winner will be invited to compete at the national level for scholarship prizes. The intercollegiate competition requires students to design, fabricate and race a concrete canoe. The canoe must consist of 70 percent Portland cement by weight and may contain admixtures and reinforcement for strength and stability. Each canoe will be judged on an oral and written presentation, a display, the canoe itself, and five canoe races, two with male crews, two with female crews and one co-ed crew. The team with the highest overall score will win the competition. Representing Lamar University is graduate student Jenny Moreno of Columbia; seniors Patrick Donart, Charleston, S.C.; Ben Sherrod, Vidor; Kelton Lemons, Dallas; Karl Leedy, Hemphill; Paul Jungen, Bridge City; Brian Kramer, Houston; and David Barthelemy, Nederland; juniors Steven Beadle, Beaumont; John Peterson, Danbury, Texas; Jose Maldonado, Richmond, Texas; Yancy Scott, Jasper; and Jason Waldrep, Orangefield; sophomores Marc Ochoa, Vidor; Peter Jungen, Bridge City; and Sherri Eaglin, Port Arthur; and freshmen Tiffany Allison, Orangefield. Several area businesses contributed to program including Transit Mix, M&D Supply, Soileau Printing, Seabreeze Culvert, Contractors Mason Construction and Bo-Mac, and consulting engineering firms Arceneaux & Gates, Carroll & Blackman, Bob Shaw, Schaumburg & Polk and Sigma.
