LAMAR TEAM PREPARES TO RACE CONCRETE CANOE
4/15/99
A CONCRETE IDEA: Lamar University engineering seniors Chevin Hutchinson and Ben Sherrod test the "Neon Moon" a concrete creation on the pond at the John Gray Center in preparation for the American Society of Civil Engineers sponsored Concrete Canoe Races to be held this weekend in Longview, Texas. The 210-pound canoe, made of fiberglass reinforced concrete, incorporates just enough Styrofoam to allow it to float when submerged. Members of the Lamar University chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers began work on the design last semester following the previous year’s competition. The craft was painted by Lamar University art student Calvin Carter, a senior from Hempstead. "Working on a project with involvement from other students gives us insight into working together as a team," said team leader Hutchinson. Preparing for the test float are members of the Lamar University Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers: Amber Welty, senior, Nederland; Jennifer Dahse, sophomore, Deer Park; Amy Tohzien, senior, Niceville, Fla.; Ben Sherrod, senior, Vidor; Stuart Broadway, junior, Vidor, Brian Kramer, senior, Midfield; Paul Jungen, senior, Bridge City; Michael Graham, senior, Vidor; Chevin Hutchinson, senior, Sweeny; Beau Sherrod, junior, Vidor; and Brett Debord, senior, Alvin
