CVEN 3340 - Structural Analysis
Fall, 2005
2006-2008 Catalog Data: CVEN 3340: Analysis of loading for bridges and buildings. Effects of moving loads using influence lines. Shear and bending moment diagrams. Analysis of indeterminate structures. Introduction to structural design. Investigation of frames, girders, and bents. Corequisite: Math 3301. Prerequisite: CVEN 2372.
Textbook: Structural Analysis, 6th edition, R.C. Hibbeler
Reference: None
Instructor: Robert Yuan, Professor of Civil Engineering Department
Goals: (1) Apply concepts of static equilibrium to calculate reactions in statically determinate structures. Draw shear and bending moment diagrams for beams and frames. Solve for forces in statically determinate trusses. Draw lines for reactions, member forces, shears and moments. Calculate deflections in statically determinate beams, frames, and trusses. Solve problems with simple statically indeterminate structures using classical methods. (ABET Outcomes # a)
(2) Identify, formulate and solve structural engineering problems. Ability to identify and calculate the parameters needed (forces, bending moments, shear forces, and deflections) for the design of structures. (ABET Outcomes # e)
(3) Use information technology and modern engineering tools. Use the computer program STAAD III to analyze the structural problems. (ABET Outcomes # k)
