ENGINEER-IN-TRAINING

 

Purpose of Position

 

This is an entry-level position involved in the application of engineering fundamentals to design of wastewater, water, highway and street projects; including subdivision and land planning. This is a developmental position in which the engineer learns to apply theoretical knowledge to practical application.

 

Typical Duties

 

The following duties are typical of the position but are not all encompassing. Each person is expected to help out in whatever duties are required to deliver a quality product on schedule.

 

1.                  Performs routine design tasks, techniques, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results, and operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.

 

2.                  Works on portions of projects.

3.                  Is encouraged to try to solve engineering problems using experience, judgment and education but is expected to ask for assistance when needed.

4.                  Input of data into pre-written computer programs.

5.                  Research equipment selection from catalogs under direction of Project Engineer.

6.                  May prepare the drawings of designs he/she has originated or from sketches provided by others.

 

Educational/Skill/Specialization Requirements

 

Graduation from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university with a degree in Civil Engineering and Professional Registration as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) Advanced knowledge and experience using computer-aided design and drafting, spreadsheets and word processing programs. Advanced knowledge and experience in hydraulic and hydrologic engineering.

 

Essential Functions

 

 Identify and analyze the principle design features and major design alternatives.  Produce detailed, final design plans, specifications and estimates in accordance with AASHTO, FHWA, state DOT and/or Municipal Departments of Public Works and Waster & Wastewater Utility.

 

Consult with the Project Manager in the review of detailed plans, specifications and estimate of cost to ensure conformity with the project scope and design standards. Review design details and coordinate technical recommendations, assess the cost-effective constructability of the project and generally evaluate the quality of the project. To provide day-to-day technical support, guidance and input. Other duties as assigned.
