Dr. Robert Yuan joined
the "Lamar University Team", September 1st, 2003.
Previously, he was a professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
at the University of Texas at Arlington for 35 years. Dr. Yuan received
his Ph.D. degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University
of Illinois in 1968, and his M.S. and B.S. degrees in Structural Engineering
in 1964 and 1960, respectively. He has been teaching courses in the
areas of structural analysis/design, structural mechanics, and structural
materials. His research specialties include:
(1) properties and behavior
of reinforced/pre-stressed concrete,
(2) fiber-reinforced polymer composites
for civil structures application, and
(3) experimental mechanics.
Representative Research Activities
• Properties and behavior of fly-ash concrete (freeze-thaw durability,
corrosion of reinforcement)
• Properties and behavior of high-strength concrete (compressive
strength, modulus of elasticity)
• Pre-stressed concrete columns and walls (global and local buckling
strengths)
• Shrinkage and creep deformation of high-strength concrete
• Core strength evaluation for high-strength concrete
• Experimental investigation of steel vessel container (full scale
testing)
• Experimental characterization of FRP composite column (for short,
medium, and long columns with six cross section configurations)
• Experimental evaluation of FRP mechanical connection (bearing
strength with effects of temperature and humidity)
• Structural diagnostics and health monitoring for light-rail
transit system
• Investigation and design criteria for CCTV camera pole
• Bond strength of FRP composite rebars in concrete (GFRP, CFRP
bars)
• Time-dependent deformation of FRP composite columns (two cross
section configurations)
• Experimental characterization of fiber-reinforced concrete pipes
(dry and wet strength, creep deformation under water, abrasion evaluation)
