Tony Paine Memorial Scholarship in Civil Engineering GENERAL INFORMATION: The scholarship was endowed by a cash gift of $5,000. The original corpus
will be invested and administered within the established fiduciary policy
of Lamar University-Beaumont. Only the interest earned will be used to make
the scholarship awards. Interest earned but not used for scholarships will
be added to the corpus. The selection process herein described has the option
of awarding the unused available funds in succeeding years provided the corpus
is not invaded. BACKGROUND: This scholarship was established in July, 1986 by Ms. P. J. Paine in loving memory of her son Tony. The funds were given to Lamar University-Beaumont to endow a scholarship that shall be known as the Tony Paine Scholarship and the recipient of the award shall be known as the Tony Paine Scholar. The scholarship will be permanently endowed through Lamar University-Beaumont and awarded annually to a LUB student of engineering. The principal gift will remain in perpetuity. Only the interest earned will be used to fund the scholarship awards. ELECTION OF RECIPIENTS: Recipients will be selected by a faculty committee appointed by the Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering. A scholarship grant will be awarded annually and will be paid in equal amounts at registration of the semesters for which the scholarship is granted. The scholar must be a full-time student working toward a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the programs within the College of Engineering. Priority, however, shall be given to a student in the Civil engineering program. The scholar may be an academically acceptable incoming freshman or a continuing engineering student who has earned a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade-point average. In both cases, priority shall be given to a student with demonstrated financial needs. The recipient must maintain a GPA of at least 2.50 each semester and earn a minimum of 12 academic semester hours. The scholar must be an acknowledged "good citizen" of the University and the community-at-large. If the scholar does not maintain the above standards during the first semester of the award, she/he will be ineligible to receive the scholarship the following semester, but may reapply at a later time. In such cases, another recipient will be selected for the next semester. The scholarship will be awarded annually and can ba granted to the same student for a total of four academic years (eight regular semesters) provided the student meets the eligibility criteria listed above. SELECTION CRITERIA: (1) Major/Degree - The recipient must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree in Civil Engineering. (2) Overall GPA - Minimum overall GPA of 2.6. (3) Class Level - Open to sophomore, junior, and senior level students. (4) Class Load Requirements - Preference is to be given to full-time students; however, part-time students may be considered. (5) Other - Financial need may be considered, but it is not to be the determining factor. |
